Fecal analysis in animals is a simple yet valuable diagnostic tool that helps detect parasites, inflammation, and disorders of the digestive system. What does fecal analysis include?

  1. Macroscopic Evaluation
  • Color, consistency, and odor, presence of mucus or blood
  • Presence of foreign material, undigested food, or worms
  • Assessment of bowel movement frequency and quality (based on patient history)
  1. Microscopic Analysis

Performed on a stool sample using specialized techniques (direct smear or flotation methods) to detect parasites, such as Giardia spp. and Coccidia.

  1. Additional Tests / Rapid Diagnostics
  • Giardia Antigen Test
  • Parvovirus Test (especially in cases of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis)
  • Coronavirus (CCV) or Rotavirus (in young animals with diarrhea)
  • Cryptosporidium spp. (particularly in immunocompromised patients)
  1. Fecal Culture (selected cases)

Performed when bacterial infection is suspected (e.g., Salmonella, Campylobacter).

May be accompanied by antibiotic susceptibility testing, if needed.
