PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a molecular diagnostic method used to detect the DNA or RNA of specific pathogens with high accuracy and sensitivity. This technique amplifies small amounts of genetic material from viruses, bacteria, or parasites, allowing detection even when only minimal quantities are present. It is a fast, reliable, and highly sensitive diagnostic tool.

When is PCR testing performed?

  • When there is suspicion of infection with specific pathogens, especially if conventional methods (such as culture or microscopy) are inconclusive.
  • When rapid diagnosis is critical (e.g., viral or bacterial infections).
  • To confirm a diagnosis or monitor response to treatment.
  • For the detection and monitoring of parasitic infections (e.g., leishmania, ehrlichia, anaplasma).

How is the test performed?

Our veterinary team collects a sample, which may include blood, body fluids (such as joint fluid or cerebrospinal fluid), or a swab from mucosal surfaces or tissues. The sample is then analyzed in the PAWsitive Vet Care laboratory.
