Electrotherapy

Veterinary electrotherapy is a non-invasive therapeutic method that uses controlled electrical currents to promote healing and rehabilitation. It is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and neurological conditions. During a session, targeted electrical pulses are delivered to specific areas of the body via specialized electrodes.
This treatment is designed to:
- Alleviate pain (analgesia)
- Reduce inflammation and swelling
- Enhance neuromuscular function
- Boost local blood circulation
- Prevent muscle atrophy
- Increase muscle strength and tone
When is it applied to pets?
- Common indications for electrotherapy include:
- Soft tissue injuries (muscles, or tendons)
- Osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions
- Neurological disorders (e.g., paralysis, or neuritis)
- Post-operative rehabilitation
- Geriatric care to improve mobility and quality of life in senior pets
Modalities used
- TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation): Stimulates nerves for pain relief.
- EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation): Stimulates muscles for recovery and strengthening.
At PAWsitive Vet Care, electrotherapy is performed by a specialized animal physical therapist in our dedicated rehabilitation suite. Treatment follows a comprehensive diagnostic assessment by our veterinary team to ensure the most effective care plan for your pet.
